In 1980 and '81 he was a partner in Contemporary Installations, an art transportation and installation service based in Beverly Hills, California. From 1986-1992 he was Director of the Governor's Gallery at the New Mexico State Capitol and was a founding member of the Captiol Art Foundation. From 1998-2000 Rutherford served as Assistant Director of Special Projects at the Tennessee State Museum.
